In May, the Justice Department sued the school district , saying that Darren Edgecomb, then principal of Turning Points Academy near West Palm Beach, punished Anne Williams Dorsey, an assistant principal who went on maternity leave in 2011, by demoting her and cutting her pay. In the lawsuit, federal officials asked a court to require that the district implement appropriate and effective measures to prevent discrimination and retaliation. Under a settlement that the school board approved Wednesday, the district will pay $350,000 to Dorsey and agree to the terms of a consent decree, including giving new anti-discrimination and anti-harrassment training to all of its supervisors and managers. In exchange, the school board will not have to admit to any wrongdoing. The consent agree signed by the school board states that the board denies it discriminated or retaliated against Ms. Dorsey in violation of (federal law). No woman should face discrimination for her decision to have a family, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division, said in a statement.Women like Anne Williams Dorsey deserve the full enforcement of this nations employment discrimination laws, which ensure that they do not lose valuable positions, pay or benefits because of their pregnancies. In May the district said in a statement that it has made many changes to its practices and procedures since the allegations first came to light in 2010. According to the lawsuit, the discriminatory acts against Dorsey began soon after she told Edgecomb in 2010 that she intended to become pregnant through in vitro fertilization. Federal officials said that Dorsey was replaced by a male administrator with less experience and who she had trained herself. Dorsey said that she got word of her demotion from Edgecomb as she was in a hospital delivery room getting ready to give birth to twins. Explaining his decision, Edgecomb told Dorsey that he felt more comfortable with a man in the position, the lawsuit alleges. When Dorsey returned from maternity leave in September, she noticed on her first paycheck that her pay had been cut.
